Sketching on Location and Sketching People
Speed is very important in sketching on location. Since you are going to record a live event, you must be very quick. Making a simplified version of the subject is one way to sketch fast.
I have discovered a way of how to sketch as fast as possible. Making a simplified version of the subject is one way to sketch fast. I have used a stick figure in my drawing in order to simplify the object. I just take everything I see and as much as possible simplify it.
Stick figure drawing is not complicated which is a good thing and makes my sketching fast.
The second thing I have learned is to use simple shapes in sketching. In sketching the girl and all the other character, I start on the head and I used s sphere on top and for the jaw, I used a triangle. I would say that this makes my sketching really fast. Instead of using a complex object, simpler shapes are much easier to draw and remember. With simple shapes, I can make the stick figures and draw the character’s feature.
In sketching or in any drawing I have learned that the proportion of sizes must be considered too. If an object is near it must look big to emphasize that it is nearer. While if the object is farther it must appear smaller from the onlooker’s eyes. This factor is very important so that the viewer and you can identify the position of the object in the setting.
When I was still in elementary school, my art teacher taught as a very useful technique on how to get an accurate scale of the characters. It is to draw horizontal and vertical lines along the drawing pad. This is very effective to see the proportion of each character. Since I already have experience in using this technique, it is quite easy for me to draw a horizontal line and use it as a reference.
One thing that I have kept in mind was to not being too caught up in the technical aspects. I have learned that being loose in sketching on location must be practice. By this, I have captured important details only like the pose and gestures of the characters. I believe these are the most important things.
At first, I also get too caught up on drawing correctly. The bad thing was I let pass the other scenes because of that. However, ever since I have learned this technique I’ve improved. Instead of getting caught up I tried to get the overall picture first and focus on important scenes. Then draw loosely.
The good thing I’ve learned on sketching on location is how to become quick minded and it also forces me to simplify things. And as I tried to sketch the moving situation I have developed my speed and accuracy in my drawing. Most of the time uncontrolled scenes occur so being quick must be practice to capture everything.
I have practiced adding other characters in the scene as fast as possible. This is a better way of improving speed in sketching on location.
In sketching on location, I have learned that getting the best part such as the gesture is quite important. It is not easy to do it all at once, step by step I believe everything will improve in my drawing, as long as I practice and eager to learn new skills.
