How To Draw Hands
How To Draw Hands
Step One: Drawing the Wrist and Hand
Use a pencil on white sketch paper to draw the wrist and the palm of the hand. The palm is shaped like and square with rounded edges. Refer to the images below for more information. The next step is to draw the figners. Lets start with the Thumb.
Step Two: Now Draw The thumb on the hand
Draw a thicker cylinder shape for the thumb. Start drawing the thumb shape below the top of the triangle shaped palm. Note: The thumb will be thicker and shorter than the other finders. Try looking at your own hand for reference.
Step Three: Drawing the knuckles
To draw the knuckles next – Draw four small circles over the pal area to show the knuckles area. Note: Once the thumb and the knuckles are in place the hand should start to be forming and looking natural.
Step Four: How To Draw the Fingers
Draw cylinder like object to construct the finders under the knuckles. Please use the photos below to help you arange the finders on the palm. Please Remember that not all fingers are the same length. In most cases the middle finder is the longest of all fingers.

Step Five: Fingertips and Finder Nails
The fingertips are in my book the hardest part of drawing the hand. That and the details on the knuckles, where the finders bend and inner palm area.
To help you further use your hand as a guide to construct the details in the finder tips, nails and palm area. Most finder nails are shaped like a letter ( U ) ad the letter ( V )
Details and Lines In The Hand
Step Six: Add Details and outline the major parts of the hand.
Place the major outlines of the hand using a thicker lead or line to indicate thickness.
Use shadow and rendering techniques to create a realistic type hand. Remember that there is more detail needed in the areas of the hands that crease and fold.
Note: Before drawing the hand or attempting to draw a human male or female hand its recommended that you should consider learning the internal components of the hand ie: ( Bones ) Below are a few images of the bones inside a human hand.
Note where the bones of the finder bend and how they move in different directions.
This study will help you when drawing a hand. Especially if your trying to incorporate movement into your hand drawings.
